These days, there are so many productstrending on TikTokthat I can hardly keep up—let alone try them all. But when I saw avideoof audience development strategist Ali Brown using theMermade Pro Waver, I was dying to test it out on my own strands. It gave her beachy waves and impressive volume in a few minutes flat, and I was curious whether it would have the same effect on my long, hard-to-curl hair. Spoiler alert: It did.

When I first opened myMermade Pro Waver, I was honestly a little bit intimidated. It looked much bigger than my favoritecurling wand, and I’d never used a hair tool with multiple barrels before. Thankfully, the included instructions were straightforward and easy-to-follow. Plus, it came with a protective glove, so I didn’t have to worry about burning my fingers while getting the hang of using it.

After setting the heat to 300°F, spritzing on some heat protectant and clamping the waver down on a two-inch-wide section of my hair for a few seconds, I was pretty underwhelmed. It gave my strands some very slight bends, but nothing like the gorgeous waves I’d seen Ali produce in her video. So, I decided to bump the heat up to 380°F (the device can go from 180°F to 410°F) and try another section. Sure enough, I was left with a pretty, beachy texture when I unclamped my hair.

I repeated the process on the rest of my head and in about ten minutes, I was ready for my first Zoom meeting of the day. Pretty impressive, considering it takes almost twice as long to style my hair with my blow dryer brush. Even more impressive? My hair doesn’t usually hold a curl very well, but the waves stayed in place all. day. In fact, they still held their shape even after I put my hair up and did a HIIT workout in the evening.

My only issue with theMermade Pro Waver? When I went to wash my hair, I noticed that it smelled a little burnt, and the next day my hair felt drier than usual. This isn’t an issue that’s unique to this ceramic tool—I’ve noticed a similar phenomenon from other straighteners and curlers—but it definitely makes me think twice about using theMermade Pro Waveron a daily or even weekly basis. If you’re worried about damage, celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko toldPopsugarthat staying under 350°F is generally a good baseline.

Bottom line:The Mermade Pro Waverworks like a charm, you just might want to save it for special occasions to avoid excessive heat damage.
