Greta Gerwig's live-actionBarbieabsolutely smashed expectations when it arrived in theaters this past July. Not only did it earnrave reviewsfromcritics and fans alike, but it's also quickly on its way tobecoming the highest-grossing film of 2023. (Seems all that intense press really paid off.)

Both films follow earnest and lovable characters who travel from their magical havens into our world, where they are met by plenty of big surprises and harsh truths.

3.Little Women(2019)

BeforeBarbie, Gerwig's most-recent directorial effort was her Oscar-nominated 2019 adaptation ofLittle Women, which follows four sisters as they grow up in 19th century New England. Featuring a star-studded cast and fresh insights on the well-known story, this film focuses on the rights of women and the power of female relationships, much likeBarbie.

4.Lars and the Real Girl(2007)

Before he was “just Ken,” Ryan Gosling starred as the sweet, but socially-awkward Lars Lindstrom inLars and the Real Girl. In this dramedy, Lars develops romantic, nonsexual feelings for another type of doll—a sex doll—who he carries around town like his girlfriend. It sounds strange, but this film is shockingly heart-warming.

5.Life Size(2000)

In this early aughts TV film, a young girl named Casey is mourning the loss of her mother, so she tries to bring her back to life. Instead, she accidentally transforms her “Eve” doll into a human being.

6.The Woman King(2022)

Barbiedepicts a fantasy world where women rule, but in the 2022 historical action filmThe Woman King, we see a dramatized account of the real-life Agojie (AKA the Dahomey Amazons), an all-female warrior tribe that protected their kingdom from the 17th to the 19th century.

7.Toy Story(1995)
