IntroducingRatched, which is inspired by the character fromOne Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest。The TV adaptation premiered on Netflix less than a week ago, and it’s already dethronedAwayas the streaming service’s most watched show. So, what’s the big deal?
Well,AHSalum Sarah Paulson stars as Nurse Mildred Ratched, the main antagonist in Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel. (The character was played byLouise Fletcherin Miloš Forman’s 1975 film, for which she won an Academy Award.)
Ratchedtakes place in the ’40s and tells the story of the young asylum nurse. Although she seems like the perfect caretaker, she secretly develops a strange bitterness toward her patients, ultimately unleashing a darkness that can only be described as monstrous.
Paulson previously discussedRatchedin an interview withVanity Fairand revealed that it’ll give a clear understanding of the nurse’s backstory, from her childhood to her relationships and sexuality. “By the time you get to the end of the first season, you will not wonder how and why Mildred became the way she did,” she said.
Paulson (who’s also credited as a producer on the show) is joined by Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Jon Jon Briones, Finn Wittrock, Charlie Carver, Alice Englert, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo and Vincent D’Onofrio (and apparently a monkey).
And since Murphy previously signed a multi-year deal with Netflix, you can expect to see a lot of him on the streaming service. In addition toRatched,The PoliticianandHollywood, he’s also working onThe Boys in the Band,The Promand an untitled project based onTigerKing。
