True-crime fansought to break out their detective hats for Netflix’s all-new movie,The Tinder Swindler.
The film—which was created by the masterminds behindDon’t F**k with Cats—premiered on thestreaming serviceearlier this month. And after weeks of climbing the charts,The Tinder Swindlerhas finally claimed the number one spot on Netflix’slist of most-watched movies. (It’s currently ranked ahead ofDespicable Me 2,St. Vincent,Tall Girl 2andDespicable Me.)
The must-watch documentary introduces viewers to Shimon Hayut (AKA The Tinder Swindler), a convicted conman who used the dating app to trick women into “lending” him money. After meeting someone online, Hayut would shower his date with lavish trips and vacations. Once he gained their trust, Hayut would ask them for money and then vanish.
“You can find a bit of everything on Tinder,” someone says in the clip. “But one little swipe can change your life.”
The Tinder Swindlerdoubles as a platform for the victims to tell their truth. The show offers a gut-wrenching look at their eerily similar stories, all of which lead to the same conclusion.
“That’s when the police tell me the man I loved was never real,” someone adds.
Netflix’s official synopsis reads, “Posing as a wealthy, jet-setting diamond mogul, he wooed women online then conned them out of millions of dollars. Now some victims plan for payback.”
