This Barbie was almost a scream queen.

Years beforeMargot Robbie, 33, starred in thehighest-grossing movie ever directed by a woman, years before sheearned two Academy Award nominationsand years before she started her own production company,LuckyChap Entertainment, Robbie was just an Australian actress trying to make it big. Turns out, she auditioned for a role inAmerican Horror Story: Asylumin 2011, which...she ultimately did not get. However, her audition made a lasting impression on the casting director, Eric Dawson.

In a new interview withBackstage, Dawson reflected on Robbie's audition for the second season ofAmerican Horror Story.

“Margot has a lot of ‘it’ factors,” he said. “Margot is probably one of my favorite auditions of all time, and it was right before she broke out. She was such a star. It was crazy, her star appeal when she walked in the room. Even though she didn't get that role, that was one of those things as a casting director where you go: ‘This is a star, what do we do with her?’”

Sadly, Dawson didn't get a chance to offer her another role later on, because, as he puts it: “Immediately, though, she was out of our realm of possibility of hiring. But that's really the fun part of casting, is seeing the people whose careers are just rising.”

American Horror Story: Asylumaired from October 2012 to January 2013. In 2013, Robbie would have two of her biggest breakout film roles, as Charlotte inAbout Timeand Naomi Lapaglia inThe Wolf of Wall Street. Only a few years later, she would star as Tonya Harding inI, Tonya, leading to her first Oscar nomination.

We're just glad Margot was still able to find her big Hollywood break.
