Queen Elizabeth made a special address to the public Sunday, regarding the current coronavirus pandemic. And 24 million people tuned in on TV alone to hear her message, according to the英国广播公司.
During the five minute speech, Her Majesty offered viewers reassurance that although times are difficult, better days are on the horizon.
“Together we are tackling this disease, and I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it,” she said. “We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return. We will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again.”
The 93-year-old monarch also recognized that while she was addressing the country domestically, this is truly a global issue.
“While we have faced challenges before, this one is different,” she continued. “This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour, using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal. We will succeed—and that success will belong to every one of us.”
Her Majesty hasn't made a speech like this since 2002, when she spoke on the eve of her mother’s funeral. Last month, the monarchpenned a powerful noteaddressing the British people’s ability to come together.
“As Philip and I arrive at Windsor today, we know that many individuals and families across the United Kingdom, and around the world, are entering a period of great concern and uncertainty,” she wrote. "We are all being advised to change our normal routines and regular patterns of life for the greater good of the communities we live in and, in particular, to protect the most vulnerable within them. At times such as these, I am reminded that our nation’s history has been forged by people and communities coming together to work as one, concentrating our combined efforts with a focus on the common goal.”
