‘Squid Game’ Season Two: Details on the Cast, Plot, Release Date & More

Calling allSquid Gamefans: We haven’t seen the last of Gi-hun.

The survival drama, which follows a group of players competing in deadly children's games for a cash prize, becameNetflix'smost-watched show debut, drawing in 111 million viewers in its first month alone. And now, the series boasts several accolades, including sixEmmy Awards, threeSAG Awardsand aGolden Globe.

Considering season one's massive success, it's no surprise the show creators have already confirmedSquid Gameseason two. But what can fans expect? And is there a trailer? Here's everything we know about season two so far.

1. When WasSquid GameSeason Two Confirmed?

Hwang told theAssociated Press, “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So, I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”

Although things were only in the preliminary stages, Hwang promised that Gi-hun would return and "do something for the world." But what does this mean? This brings us to our next question...

2. What WillSquid GameSeason Two Be About?

While speaking withThe Hollywood Reporter, Hwang revealed his plans to pick up where season one left off. In case you need a refresher, the first installment follows Gi-hun's harrowing journey to victory as he competes in the games. Meanwhile, Hwang Jun-ho, a South Korean detective, infiltrates the island where the games occur by posing as an employee. However, he's shocked to learn that his missing brother has been spearheading the entire operation all along.

Naturally, fans have been theorizing aboutpotential plot twists赛季两个像哦Il-nam的可能性(AKA Player 001) being Gi-hun's biological father. But Hwang doesn't intend to address those theories. Rather, he plans to drive the plot forward by focusing on Gi-hun's next steps. He said, "I’ve seen many reactions from people about the show, but I don’t want to make season two as a response to those reactions. The philosophies I put in season one all naturally extend to season two."

Hwang continued, "Instead of trying to meet the expectations of viewers, I just thought about the last moment when Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane, and I thought about what he will do next. There will naturally be a flow of events that will lead all the way to the end of the season. I can’t share any details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end of season one, so season two is going to be about what that new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with this new kind of character."

In another interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, Hwang also mentioned that season two will further the backstories of characters who are involved in the games. Hesaid: "I’d like to explore that storyline—what is going on between those two brothers? And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode. And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun’s story as he turns back, and explore more about how he’s going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games."

3. Who Is in the Cast ofSquid GameSeason Two?

In June, Netflix released a cast announcement video, confirming that fans will see some familiar faces and a few fresh, new players.

Returning from season one are Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo. And joining them are Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun. Their characters have yet to be revealed, but the cast announcement video suggeststhey will portray new contestants.

4. Is There a Trailer forSquid GameSeason Two?

There's no full-length trailer just yet, but Netflix did treat fans to a shortteaserin June 2022. The 5-second clip, which features a close-up of the animatronic doll from season one, was posted on the officialSquid GameInstagram account. The caption read, “On your marks. Get set. Greenlight. Squid Game continues, only on Netflix. #SquidGameS2.”

5. DoesSquid GameSeason Two Have a Release Date?

An official release date hasn't been announced. But while speaking withVanity Fairin 2022, Hwang hinted that the second season ofSquid Gamewill likely drop towards the end of 2023 or early in 2024.

6. Will There Be aSquid GameSeason Three?

Squid Gameseason three has not been confirmed—but that isn't stopping Hwang from thinking ahead.

In December 2021, during an interview with theKorean Times,the director shared that he already had plans for a third season. "I’m in talks with Netflix over season two as well as season three," he said. "We will come to a conclusion any time soon."
