‘Modern Family’ Star Jesse Tyler Ferguson Explains Why a Spin-Off Series Fell Through

Nowadays, it seems like every show is getting either a spin-off or a reboot. Even thoughModern Familyonly ended two years ago, fans have been wondering if the beloved comedy series would ever get the sequel treatment. Unfortunately, a possible spin-off might not be in the cards—as far as ABC is concerned.

While appearing onWatch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,actorJesse Tyler Ferguson(AKA Mitchell) shared there was a spin-off series based on his character and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) in the works. However, ABC decided to scrap the entire project.

“There were discussions,” the actor said. “I think the network decided against it. That's the first time I’ve ever said that.”

Modern Familyaired on ABC for 11 seasons. Created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, the comedy series followed one big family living in three households in Los Angeles. The show went on to receive several accolades, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series five years in a row.

In addition, the ABC comedy series took home a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy in 2011. Alongside Ferguson and Stonestreet, the show’s stars includedSofía Vergara, Ed O'Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sarah Hyland and more.
