But First: What’s the Difference Between Alcohol-Free and Alcohol-Removed Wines?

Think of “non-alcoholic” as an umbrella term for wines with 0.5 percent or less alcohol by volume. If the wine is also described as “alcohol-removed,” that means it was made using the same process as you would to make wine, only—as you might guess—the booze was removed before bottling, resulting in a drink that has trace amounts of alcohol. (The process is often referred to as “dealcoholizing” the wine, so you may see that term on labels of both alcohol-removed and alcohol-free drinks.)

If it’s labeled “alcohol-free,” the drink can only be labeled as such when it contains absolutely no detectable alcohol, per theFDA.

Can You Drink Non-Alcoholic Wine If You’re Pregnant?

That’s best to discuss with your doctor, particularly if you’re considering an alcohol-removed variety. “There are currently no studies directly evaluating the safety of non-alcoholic beverages in pregnancy. However, there are data indicating that such beverages might contain higher-than-expected amounts of ethanol,” theCollege Family Physicians of Canada advises, citing a2010 Motherisk studythat found that 29 percent of alcohol-removed wines that claimed to have zero percent ABV actually contained up to 1.8 percent. Just to be safe, the authors recommend “complete abstinence” from alcohol-removed drinks.

TOTAL:95/100

,它没有比赛:Luminara箴言ided the closest take to red and white wine. It wasn’t just the flavor—which tended to be well-balanced, with a lingering finish. The scent was as close as we’d come to raising a glass of chardonnay, or a full-bodied red; many brands have more of a wet cardboard odor that’s hard to dismiss as you sip. Plus, the price point is comparable to a nice bottle of wine, making it a great gift that won’t break the bank.

While some non-alcoholic wines seemed more like a concoction of juices poured into a wine bottle, Luminara stands out for its craftsmanship. Tasters noted the scent of spice and smokiness—spot-on to drinking a classic red—without knowing this drink is aged in French and American oak (which helps give it that complex scent and flavor). The black cherry notes shown through, making it a rare moment when we could genuinely say, “I can’t tell this doesn’t have alcohol in it.” Or, OK, more than 0.5 percent ABV.

Served side-by-side with a glass of classic chardonnay, our taster was stumped: Which had 12.5 percent ABV, and which was less than 0.5 percent? (Until this taste test, we rolled our eyes at anyone who said today’s non-alcoholic wines were “almost indistinguishable.”) Maybe it’s the oak-barrel aging process, but Luminara consistently had less of a sweet grape juice taste than other brands, and this one had a touch of the buttery finish you’d expect from a chard.

There are a bunch of great sparkling rosés on the market, so choosing a favorite was tricky. But Studio Null won out, largely for its balanced flavor (lightly sweet) with a crisp finish and bright acidity. It’s the kind of palate cleanser that can cut through greasy or heavy foods, making it our top rec for barbecues and comfort food.

When you’re lounging by the pool (or want to summon summer when you’re on the couch in the dead of winter), this non-alcoholic rosé makes for a great drink. The watermelon and peach notes come through, but it never tastes saccharine or syrupy. If you’re not sure what kind of wine someone might like—if they were drinking, that is—this is a safe option, since it’s pretty mellow all around. (The brand’ssparkling varietywasbarelyedged out byStudio Null, so it’s another solid pick too.)

Rock Grace

TOTAL:88/100

Rock Grace Ruby bills itself as an elixir, rather than a wine, because its drinks aren’t fermented—in fact, they don’t even contain grapes. While it has the pink hue of rosé, the elixir gets its color from organic raspberry juice concentrate. Rose water, filtered water and a series of extracts (dandelion, lemon balm, vanilla and ginseng) round out the flavor, resulting in a light-yet-refreshing drink you can sip all day long.

It doesn’t taste like wine (it’s more like a fruity spa water), yet it’s become a hit among nondrinkers for its taste. Oh, and it happens to be zero-calorie and free of sulfites, sugars, sweeteners, preservatives and gluten.

The brand partners with chefs and sommeliers, creating envelope-pushing drinks that are every bit as exciting to sample as a tasting menu at your favorite restaurant.
